UFO sightings in North America have tripled in frequency in recent years according to statistics that often tie reportage to the growth of online communities and social media in particular. But UFO sightings have been around since long before the internet and reports of unidentified flying objects can be found as far back as the mid-19th century – the most famous being the Roswell incident of 1947.

However, for an incredible two years in the mid-1970s, residents in Canada’s southern Manitoba reported nightly viewings of an unidentified object that came to be affectionately known as Charlie, or Charlie Red Star. The string of unprecedented sightings launched the biggest UFO craze in Canadian history and author and UFO researcherGrant Cameron was there. CHARLIE RED STARchronicles what he witnessed during that eventful – yet still unexplained – period of time.

As Cameron recounts in the book, he became so enchanted by their extraterrestrial interloper and the mystery surrounding its persistent appearances that he applied himself to countless hours studying previous UFO sightings and supposed alien encounters. He elevated himself to the position of de facto tour guide leading visitors to see Charlie for themselves. As he recounts in the book, at one point he heard rumors of nuclear testing south of the Canada–U.S. border, which might have explained what Charlie Red Star actually was – although the U.S. government denied any testing activity in the vicinity.

More than Cameron’s experiences alone, the new book recounts stories by eyewitnesses, photographers, and reporters chasing down the truth behind these fascinating, daily UFO sightings. Just like Carey and Schmidt’s Inside the Real Area 51CHARLIE RED STAR takes its readers on a journey through unexplained encounters of a mysterious kind and begs the readers to ask themselves: What exactly was Charlie Red Star, where did it come from and where did it go?
